Virtual St. Augustine
General James Grant, was appointed governor of British East Florida in 1763. He arrived in St. Augustine on August 29, 1764. For the next six and one -half years he would work tirelessly to promote East Florida as an emerging and prosperous Crown Colony. Grant became ill in 1771 and took a leave of absence to return to Britain for medical care. In 1773 he resigned his post as governor and never returned to Florida.
